“Ekkehard Stoevesand was born on June 25, 1946, in Berlin, the post-war destroyed city. He grew up in Berlin, studied at Universit?t der Künste in Berlin. Now he resides and works in Berlin as an independent artist.

His artistic life as a sculptor and painter could be characterized as a continuous departure. To him, there would be never a formative influence on his way of working and his style. Ekkehard is a Trojan worker, even under hard conditions. He keeps himself in absorbing passion and energy from challenging the limit of his capability, while he is fascinated with mountain skiing, surf riding and his weekly running training. Until now, he never gives himself a chance to rest.

According to his age and career, Ekkehard would be one of the members of the third post-war generation in Berlin: amongst those would be Heinz Tr?kes, Alexander Camarow, Werner Heldt, E. W. Nay, Hans Uhlmann and Karl Hartung, whose work expresses the creative power of post-war Berlin. Following and still related to their art were the painters Otto Eglau, C. F. H?lzmann, C.H. Kliemann.

His strong colorful compositions take the opposite direction of abstraction. He does not abstract from something to something “new”, he rather creates something new in complete freedom so as to speak in the second view discovers in his paintings new realities, vistas, spheres and spaces, shadows and blazes.

In Ekkehard’s paintings there is a lot of experience and background, while his paintings neither offer comfortable, nor security. For the curious eye, there’s a lot to discover. The artistic style and gestures – they are unmistakable powerful, impetuous and eventful – in the field of association, powerful, on the threshold of abstraction. His visual experiences turn into objects. The observer aims for insight beyond internalized conceptions of beauty. This is when love for the composition arises.

Road to China solo exhibition has been accumulated about 50 works through years of his active creation in China since year of 2000, from the first time that Ekkehard was invited to be a visiting professor by Tianjing Academy of Fine Arts. These works are all about China-motif, from which we can strongly sense the passion and enthusiasm of the artist on the life in Beijing and other parts of China, such as hutong, temples, street, historical sites and people etc.

Ekkehard’s work does not lead us to compare. We shall not need to ask the artist, as Ekkehard is the one – and nobody else.”
